LipoMicel: Helping Your Body Get More From Your Supplements
Why Absorption Matters as Much as What's on the Label
When choosing a supplement, we often focus on what's inside the bottle: How many milligrams does it contain? What form of the nutrient is being used? How often should we take it? But there's another important piece of the puzzle that's easy to overlook — how much of that nutrient your body can actually absorb and use.
This is known as bioavailability, and it can vary considerably from one nutrient to another. Some beneficial compounds are naturally difficult for the body to absorb, which means simply increasing the amount on a supplement label doesn't necessarily mean more will reach your bloodstream. That's where newer delivery technologies such as LipoMicel® Matrix come in.
What Is LipoMicel?
LipoMicel is a specialized supplement delivery system designed to improve the bioavailability of nutrients that may otherwise be difficult for the body to absorb.
One challenge with certain nutrients and plant compounds is that they don't dissolve particularly well in the watery environment of our digestive system. LipoMicel technology incorporates these ingredients into a matrix designed to improve their solubility and help make more of the active ingredient available for absorption.
Why Better Absorption Matters
Imagine taking a supplement containing a generous amount of a beneficial ingredient, but only a small portion makes it through digestion and into circulation. In that situation, what's printed on the front of the bottle doesn't necessarily tell the whole story.
Improving bioavailability may allow the body to receive greater exposure to an ingredient without simply increasing the dose. This can be particularly valuable for nutrients and compounds that present natural absorption challenges.
What Does the Research Show?
Quercetin provides a good example. This naturally occurring antioxidant is found in foods such as apples, onions, and berries, but standard supplemental quercetin has relatively low oral bioavailability. In a small human pilot study, a LipoMicel quercetin formulation produced substantially higher blood concentrations than standard quercetin. The researchers concluded that the formulation enhanced quercetin bioavailability, while also noting that larger clinical studies are needed.
Glutathione is another interesting example. Often called the body's “master antioxidant,” glutathione has traditionally presented challenges as an oral supplement because of digestion and absorption. Recent human research comparing a LipoMicel glutathione formulation with standard glutathione found significantly greater bioavailability with the LipoMicel form, demonstrating how delivery technology may help overcome some of these limitations.
Vitamin D is fat-soluble, so its absorption can also be influenced by how it is formulated and consumed. Research comparing micellized vitamin D3 with a conventional fat-soluble preparation found that the micellized form resulted in greater absorption in healthy adults and in participants with intestinal malabsorption. This isn't a study of every LipoMicel vitamin D product specifically, but it helps illustrate why micellar delivery systems are of interest for improving the absorption of certain fat-soluble nutrients.
What About Liposomal Supplements?
You may already be familiar with liposomal supplements, which also aim to improve nutrient delivery by incorporating ingredients into structures containing phospholipids. LipoMicel uses a different micellar formulation, but the general objective is similar: help nutrients that present absorption challenges become more bioavailable to the body.
Rather than assuming one delivery system is always superior, it's worth considering the particular nutrient, formulation, and research behind the product you're choosing.
Look Beyond the Milligrams
The bigger takeaway isn't that everyone needs a specialized supplement delivery system. It's that quality, formulation, and absorption matter alongside dosage.
When comparing two supplements, the product with the largest number on the label isn't automatically the one that will provide the greatest amount of usable nutrient. Research involving ingredients such as quercetin, glutathione, and vitamin D is helping us better understand how formulation can influence what happens to a nutrient after we swallow it.
