Eye Health Supplements: Do They Really Work?

Eye Health Supplements: Do They Really Work?

What decades of research have taught us about protecting our vision.

Our eyesight is something many of us take for granted - until we begin noticing changes. Reading becomes a little harder, colours aren't quite as vibrant, or nighttime driving becomes more challenging. While these changes are a normal part of aging for many people, researchers have spent decades studying whether nutrition can help support healthy vision.

The answer is encouraging.

One of the largest eye health studies ever conducted, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2 (AREDS2), found that a specific combination of nutrients could help slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in people who already had moderate stages of the disease. While the study wasn't designed to prevent AMD or restore lost vision, it confirmed something nutrition experts had long suspected: the foods and nutrients we consume can play an important role in supporting the health of our eyes.

Our eyes are constantly exposed to light, oxygen, and environmental stress. Over time, this creates oxidative damage - similar to what happens elsewhere in the body as we age.

Certain nutrients help defend against that damage.

Two of the stars of the AREDS2 study were lutein and zeaxanthin. These naturally occurring carotenoids are found in high concentrations within the macula, the part of the retina responsible for our sharp central vision. Think of them as part of the eye's natural defence system, helping filter blue light while protecting delicate tissues from oxidative stress. The study also highlighted the importance of antioxidant nutrients like vitamins C and E, along with zinc and copper, which help support healthy retinal tissue.

One misconception about eye supplements is that they can dramatically improve eyesight or eliminate the need for glasses.

That's not what the research shows.

Instead, the evidence suggests that these nutrients work by helping maintain the health of the eye over time. For individuals with intermediate AMD, the AREDS2 formula reduced the risk of progressing to advanced disease. For everyone else, these same nutrients remain important building blocks that help nourish the tissues of the eye as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle.

In other words, eye health supplements aren't magic - they're nutrition.

Since the AREDS2 study, many eye health supplements have been formulated around the nutrients that showed the greatest benefit. Some products also include additional ingredients that support overall eye wellness, such as omega-3 fatty acids, which are important components of retinal cell membranes and may help support tear production and eye comfort.

Comprehensive formulas like Platinum Naturals Total Vision combine many of these researched nutrients into one convenient supplement, making it easier to support your eyes every day alongside a healthy diet rich in leafy greens, colourful vegetables, and healthy fats.

Just as we care for our heart, bones, and joints, our eyes deserve attention too. Regular comprehensive eye exams remain one of the most important ways to protect your vision, especially as you get older. Pairing those checkups with a nutrient-rich diet -and, when appropriate, a high-quality eye health supplement - can be part of a proactive approach to maintaining healthy eyesight for years to come.
